The Big Barn
All of the identified structures on the Gilfillan Farm property are in need of varying levels of restoration work. It is the mission of the Historical Society of Upper St. Clair to restore the historic buildsings and reconstruct those that are no longer standing, to the standards set forth by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

Still at Work
The Big Barn at Gilfillan Farm no longer hosts livestock. However, it is still home to historic farming equipment, horse tack, and hay for the animals.

A Pennsylvania Bank Barn
The Big Barn at the Gilfillan Farm is considered to be a traditional Pennsylvania Bank Barn. A Bank Barn in one that is built into a hillside or an embankment where it would be accessible at both the lower and main levels. Typically, the livestock would be house in the lower level of the barn. The main level would be used for storing farming equipment, supplies, and hay or straw. This style of barn construction was popular in the mid- to late 1800's.
