Gilfillan Farm
The Scarecrows
Not So Scary
Scarecrows are manequin-like figures that are dressed to look like people, specifically farmers. Originally, scarecrows were dressed as witches to scare the crows (and other birds) away from the fields. It turns out that scarecrows don't have to look scary to be a deterrent.
Protectors of the Fields
Scarecrows are staked in open farm fields where birds forage for the recently casted seeds and growing crops. At Gilfillan Farm, the scarecrows are not only for scaring away the birds. They're a way for Maragaret Gilfillan's vision for the farm and community education to be realized. For several years, the scarecrows have been created through community wide contests, class projects, family donations, and inspired Gilfillan Farm volunteers. Sometimes, the scarecrows change with the season, pay tribute to community members, or are just for fun.
