Gilfillan Farm

Horses with Hope

Good Intentions

The utilization of the property, feeding, stabling and riding of horses are all things that the Gilfillans would have done on the farm. And we believe the Gilfillans would be proud of the service Horses with Hope provides to the community.

Maintaining a Working Farm

Horses with Hope is an organization that builds a bond between horse and human for the purpose of helping people experience success both inside and outside of their comfort zone. The programming is designed to help children and adults improve their quality of life by facilitating the process of meeting goals and objectives, ultimately allowing them to experience daily success beyond what they've ever imagined.

Horses with Hope helps to do the same for Gilfillan Farm and the Historical Society of Upper St. Clair. In order to realize Margaret Gilfillan's vision for the Farm, Horses with Hope moved onsite and took over the farm operations. They maintain a working farm by keeping horses and other animals on the property. They also enhance current educational programming and contribute to long-term ideas for incorporating additional historical and cultural elements.

In consultation with local history experts, Horses with Hope at Gilfillan Farm is considered "compatible use." The term is derived from the intent of the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, Standard 1: A property shall be used for its historic purpose or be placed in a new use that requires minimal change to the defining characteristics of the building and its site and environment. Horses with Hope is able to use the buildings without permanently altering them, maintaining the historic characteristics. Some grading work was done in a back pasture to facilitate a riding ring. The location was selected because it is hidden from view by buildings and trees, minimally impacting the viewshed.
