Gilfillan Farm
Beekeeping
The Buzz
Beekeeping has become an important part of Gilfillan Farm's garden ecosystem. The bees are kept on the property and tended to, so that they pollinate all the vegetables, flowers, and fruit trees.
Hives & Honey
Several HSUSC volunteers have beekeeping experience and generously lend their time to the bee hives. While the primary reason for keeping bees at Gilfillan Farm is for pollination to other plants on the property, another benefit to beekeeping is the production of raw honey and beeswax.
At the Gilfillan Farm, visitors can find a large number of elevated wood boxes. These boxes are the beehives. They provide a place for the bees to store their honey and pollen, and allows for a safe place for bee reproduction. The hives protect the bee population which prevents colony collapse.
